Hi everyone-
Here are some of the results from shooting camp in MN. Please look at these as bench marks for tracking your personal improvement. There is a lot of experience difference in this group so the most important aspect is how much you can improve on these scores.

2008 World Junior Trials originally scheduled for Anchorage, Dec 28-30
have been moved to Mt Itasca, Coleraine, MN. Race dates will be the
same, Dec 28, 29, 30, with official training on Dec 27th, and unofficial
training on Dec 26th.
The races have been moved because of lack of snow in Anchorage and
the lack of any alternate venue in Alaska of the size and quality needed
to hold a national event. The USBA thanks the Anchorage Organizing
Committee for their hard work planning the event and working hard to
get their new range ready for Jr Trials. We realize this is a disappointment.
Anchorage has already been offered the right to host next seasons World
Junior Trials.
Registrations will be transferred from Anchorage to Mt Itasca. Those
that have not registered yet, but wish to compete, will need to fill
out a Mt Itasca Registration form, which I will send shortly- also,
it will be posted at www.minnesotabiathlon.com and here at usbiathlon.org.
The Mt Itasca Biathlon Association is currently negotiating a hotel
deal for biathlon competitors, and I will send out hotel information
on Sunday.
Teams should plan to fly into Duluth or Minneapolis/St Paul airport.
Please feel free to email me if you have questions. We apologize for
the late change, but its difficult to judge when its too late to give
up on mother nature.
Like the events at Anchorage, there will be categories for Seniors
and Masters.

St. Cloud, Minnesota - Greystone Biathlon
poster
On Saturday, 3 March 2007, under stunning blue skies and a blanket of
fresh white snow Greystone Biathlon held is annual winter race.
Over thirty skiers participated in today’s event, including
three skiers from the USA National Team. Experienced skiers had
a long course (12.5k) to help prepare for the National race in Maine later
this month.
Approximately, twenty novice skiers tried out Biathlon for the first time
today, demonstrating a high degree of interest in this growing sport.
Novices had two shooting rounds and completed a 3.5k course.
Both the 12.5k and 3.5k courses included the famous Greystone Granite
Silos (walls) as part of the course. Special thanks to Bill Meyer
of Nisswa Biathlon for serving as range master.

The first weekend of the Minnesota Biathlon Cup 2005/6 was run
this past weekend at Mt Itasca, MN leading up to Jr World Trials the following
weekend. Under cloudy skies and windy conditions 31 starters began Saturdays
sprint race. Ben Kremer came through
with the best shooting in the windy conditions with one miss total, but
was not quick enough to overcome the rapid shooting and strong skiing
of Ben Byrne (1st Junior) and Kevin
Patzolt, 1 and 2 overall separated by one second, with Kremer in
3rd overall, 2nd Senior.
In the women's races Laura
Spector a junior outskied the Senior women, BethAnn
Chamberlain (1st Senior, 2nd overall), and Carolyn
Treacy (2nd Senior, 3rd overall) to take the overall win.
Sunday's races were under the same cloudy skies, but
the wind had died down significantly. Ben Byrne
led the 4-stage Mass Start from wire to wire for the men with Kevin
Patzoldt and Ben Kremer battling
it out shortly behind. Mark Johnson
led the Youth Men category with excellent shooting.
Carolyn Treacy took
the win in the Women's race over BethAnn Chamberlain
and Brynden Manbeck (1st Junior,
3rd overall)

Thanks to all that played this years version of Fantasy Biathlon.
Even though it was a last minute game we had 13 players, which was more
than I had expected to get. And while Piotr led from wire to wire this
year, there were changes in the leader board after every race (I thought
that I had second place locked up, but Pete's racers made a big move on
the last day).
And the winners of a Digital
Skier videos are:
» Kyle R.
» Josh B.
We have some ideas for next year including:
- an more automated login and scoring
- a full season game
- an Olympic game
- changes to the scoring (you will just need to pick the ski brand that
finishes in the top 5, and a new bonus for the mass start)
- including relays in the scoring
If you have any comments on the game or any ideas on how to improve it,
feel free to shoot me an e-mail.
Again thanks for playing,
-Ryan

A Tough Start to the Biathlon Season
It was a brutal start to the biathlon season, with 40mph
winds, blowing winds and windchills dropping to the single digits. Nevertheless,
45 racers competed in today's MN Cup#1 Mass Start Biathlon race.
Kurt Farchmin of Duluth and Kevin Patzoldt
of Grand Rapids dueled it out for the first three shooting stages,
shadowing each other on the ski track and in the range. Shooting
in high winds is very difficult, and these two only recorded 3 misses
for the first 15 shots. Coming into the final standing shooting
stage side by side, Kurt Farchmin decisively took control of the
race, hitting 3 of 5 targets in a near white out. Kevin Patzoldt
failed to hit any of his five and had to settle for second place.
Ben Byrne of Bovey was third.
In the Women's race, Sonne
Nordgren of Grand Rapids easily won the 8km Mass Start, with Brnyden
Manbeck and Sara Gaalaas, both of Grand Rapids, placing 2nd and
3rd. results pdf

The final dates and location for the Jr National Championships have been
decided. They will be held in conjunction with the Ft Kent World Cup.
The last race of the Jr Nationals will be held on the World Cup course,
and it will be a practice event for the TV crews and the Race Organizers-
it will look and feel just like a World Cup! We will then stay in Ft Kent
for the next 4 days to watch the World Cup events. This is a unique opportunity-
you can see what the big time is really like up close. During this time
we will continue to train, and will do some additional racing with the
MWCS athletes.
Other than being a great racing opportunity, these races
count toward Jr National Team status for next year. I encourage
all the junior athletes who competed at Trials to travel with the Minnesota
crew to Maine.
The races are scheduled:

Relay Format Competition Results
Presque Isle, ME - After a good first day of hosting its first
major biathlon race, the town of Presque Isle was set for another day
of exciting racing by playing host to the U.S. Biathlon Jr. National Championships.
Conditions could not be better with the sun shinning and barely any movement
amongst the wind flags on the range. The Relay Format competition is similar
to the Sprint Race where athletes shoot from the prone and standing positions;
the only difference is that the athletes are allowed three extra rounds
to hit their five targets.
In the Junior Women's
race, Annelies Cook of Saranac Lake,
NY continued to dominate the field as she won for the second time in two
chances. Following Cook in second place was Emilia
Demarchis of Burlington, VT just 31 seconds behind. Sonne
Nordgren of Marine on St. Croix, MN was third with five penalties.
The Youth Women's
races proved to be an exciting one as athletes moved in and out of the
top three throughout the race. Brynden Manbeck
of Grand Rapids, MN earned the win with a solid shooting performance.
She was followed by one of her clubmates Katie
Zupan who finished 29 seconds behind. Kelsey
Bouchard of the MWSC was third just 38 seconds back. Yesterday's
winner Brit Salmela finished in 4th.
Like Annelies Cook in the Junior Women's race, Kurt
Farchmin of Duluth, MN added another Junior National Championship
title to his resume. Farchmin used only two extra rounds to hit his 10
targets and finish 35 seconds ahead of second place finisher Kevin
Patzoldt of Grand Rapids, MN. Farchmin's clubmate Bjorn
Bakken rounded out the top three putting together a solid performance
to finish in third.
A showdown was expected between the top two Youth
men Ben Byrne and Russell Currier today. Ben Byrne raced up in
the Junior Men's category yesterday, but moved back down categories for
today's race. The tight race that was expected did not happen as planned
however as Currier of Stockholm, MN took a wrong loop and did not finish
the race. Byrne of Grand Rapids, MN won today with a strong performance
and a lead of 1 minute and 30 seconds over second place finisher Wynn
Roberts of Battle Lake, MN. Rounding out the top three was Mark
Johnson of Grand Rapids, MN.
The U.S. Junior National Championships will continue
from Ft. Kent, ME on Tuesday with the Sprint race. Afterwards the athletes
will watch the best in the world compete at the second of two U.S. World
Cups in Ft. Kent.

Mass Start Results - Presque Isle -
Aroostook County Maine has been buzzing with excitement the past few months.
Ft. Kent will play host to the second of two World Cups in the U.S. later
next week, but it was the town of Presque Isle which kicked things off
today. Presque Isle is playing host for the U.S. Biathlon Jr. National
Championships; its first ever National scale biathlon event. "The
venue is looking great and it is obvious how much work the local community
has put into this event," said Piotr Bednarski,
Minnesota Biathlon Executive Director. Presque Isle will host the
2006 Junior World Championships and these races will be used to test the
event and its volunteers.
The Women and Boys categories kicked off the day with
their 7.5k Mass Start. "Conditions on the range during the
athlete's zeroing period were very difficult," said Vladimir
Cervenka, Coach for Mt. Itasca and the U.S. Jr. National Team,
"the wind is up and down and it even switches to the other direction
at times." Annelies Cook entered
the range along with Sonne Nordgren
with a small lead over the rest of the pack. Cook left first with only
penalty and it would seem to be her day right from the start as she skied
the rest of the race alone to gain her first National title of the year.
Brit Salmela of Duluth was stellar on
the range today recording one of the best shooting scores; Salmela was
10 for 10 through the first two stages before she faltered some in the
standing position hitting 5 of her 10 standing shots. But Salmela wasn't
the only one as other athletes seem to find the penalty loop as the wind
played with their patience on the range. Salmela finished second overall
and first in the Youth category. Chasing Salmela over the final 1.5k,
Nordgren ran out of ski trail finishing 1.5 seconds back in 3rd overall,
2nd in the Junior category.
The Men's race began with a pile up at the first turn
after the start. Minnesota athletes Dan Luoma,
Nate Erlandson and Kurt Farchmin all went down with Erlandson breaking
one pole and Farchmin breaking both of his. All athletes showed
poise as they received new poles and continued on their way, well behind
the pack. Back in early January Farchmin missed his start by 30
seconds, but came back to take 2nd place. Today would seem to be
a similar event as he kept his cool working his way up through the field.
Like his teammate Brit Salmela in the Women's race, Farchmin was clean
through the his first two stages before missing 4 of his final 10 shots.
One of Farchmin's training partners Kevin Patzoldt
finished in second; like Farchmin, Patzoldt began the race strong missing
only 2 of his first 10 shots, but like many others he struggled with the
wind in standing. Rounding out the top 3 was Steve
Scott of St. Paul, MN, now training with the Maine Winter Sports
Center. Erlandson finished in 5th.
Local favorite Russell Currier of Stockholm,
ME gave his fans a treat today by winning the Youth Men's race.
Currier was strong through prone missing only one before faltering in
standing missing 6 of his final 10 shots. Russell's fast skiing
was no surprise to anyone as he proved that he can ski with some of the
best at the Jr. World Championships in France earlier this year.
Aaron Nistler of Grand Rapids, MN turned
in a solid performance finishing in second with 8 penalties ahead of another
local favorite Newt Rogers who finished
with 6 penalties.

Ben Byrne of Bovey, MN surprised everyone
but his coach this morning, by taking 4th place at the World Junior Championships
in Haute Maurienne, France. Byrne was leading the race after a clean
prone shooting stage, but he missed two in standing and finished 1:05
behind Jean Le Gullec of Valcartier,
Quebec. Byrne's finish puts him in a good position for Wednesday's Pursuit
competition. Russel Currier of
Ft Kent, ME finished 35th, Tyler Gerling of
Grand Rapids, MN 47th, and Mark Johnson of
Grand Rapids, MN finished 63rd.

Cook and Bouchard Win On Final Day of Junior
Trials
Annilies Cook of /Saranac Lake, NY and
Kelsy Bouchard of Fort Kent, ME, each
won their first competition of the three day Youth and Junior Biathlon
World Championships Trials today at the Mt. Itasca Biathlon Center to
earn spots on the US Team.
Cook, the top ranked junior woman and Bouchard, ninth
place at the 2003 World Championships had been in the middle of the pack
for the earlier sprint and pursuit format competitions. Cook's results,
although not as good as she expected, had her in a position to make the
team with an average performance today. But Bouchard was on the verge
of missing the event she had been preparing for all year. The low point
was 16 penalties in Thursday's 10K Pursuit Format. But with wins today,
both young women qualified for the team and should be among the top US
performers at the Championships in Haute Maurienne, France January 24-31.more

Minnesota Athletes Dominate In Cold Conditions
Minnesota natives won all four categories in sprint competitions today
as the Youth and Junior World Championship Trials opened under cold, clear
conditions at the Mt Itasca Biathlon Center.
Junior National Coach Vladimir
Cervenka, who is also serves Mt Itasca Nordic Director, was beaming
after the competitions. He commented, "It was a beautiful day. We had
a great competition- everything went very well. Conditions were perfect.
We had about 5 inches of new snow last night and it was about 4 degrees
this morning. After the races, I saw a lot of smiles on faces. We had

Manbeck and Byrne Dominate Sprint! Snow
flurries and a stadium covered in 2-3 feet of man made snow groomed in
perfect corduroy set the stage for the first midwest biathlon races of
the winter season.
Brynden Manbeck (Grand Rapids, MN) won
the women's 6km Sprint, and Ben Byrne
(Bovey, MN) won the men's 7.6km Sprint by convincing margins. The
competition at Mt Itasca was characterized by tricky winds, making sight
corrections difficult for some of the less experienced shooters.
In the women's race, Sonne Nordgen of
Marine on St Croix placed second, 48 seconds back, closely followed by
Duluth Biathlon's Brit Salmela, one
second later. In the men's race Veteran Ben
Kremer finished 58 seconds behind Byrne, and Kurt
Farchim was third 1:13 off the winner's pace.
Mass Start, Manbeck Shoots Clean!....well,
almost .. Sixteen year old Brynden Manbeck
put on a impressive show of marksmanship and skiing today at Mt. Itasca.
She shoot clean her first three stages of the 8.6km mass start race. Coming
into her 4th stage, the second standing stage, Brynden hit the first 4
or her 5 targets, missing her last very last target to the disappoint
of the hometown crowd. Shooting clean in a 4 stage race is a rare occurence-
even at an international level. There will be many more chances for this
talented young athlete. Sonne Nordgren
finished in 2nd place, 1:35 out, skiing very fast, but unable to overcome
the curse of the penalty loop. The big surprise of the day was a very
determined Rebecca Mueller of Brainerd,
MN, who had a spectacular day in the range, hitting 17 of 20 targets and
finishing 2:23 out of the lead.
The men's race was an exciting horse race down to the last of the 4 shooting
stages, with the lead continually changing. Ben
Byrne, Kurt Farchmin and Ben Kremer were among the early leaders,
but it was sixteen year old Mark Johnson
of Grand Rapids, MN who put on an impressive display of shooting and skiing
to surprise the entire field when he moved into first place after the
last shooting stage. Unfortunately for Mark, he ran out of real estate
before the pair of Kurt Farchmin and Ben Byrne caught him in the last
kilometer before the finish. Farchmin and Byrne dueled out the last lap,
with Farchmin pulling ahead in the last 400 meters.

Mount Itasca had a big turnout for MN Cup
#3 in preparation of the U.S. National Team Trials to be held Dec 30-Jan
2. The Mass Start format always is a great spectator event and Sunday's
race was no exception. Youngsters Ben
Byrne and Bjorn
Baaken put on a clinic and took the first
two places overall, beating out a field of Juniors (19-20) and Senior
Men (21 and up) competitors. Ben Byrne of Bovey put together a good final
shooting stage to reel in Bjorn Bakken of Duluth who had lead the whole
race. Ben finished 3 seconds ahead of Bjorn, with Adam
VanStaten, Duluth, in 3rd.
In the Women's race, Carolyn
Treacy took the field by a wide margin,
finishing first 3 min ahead of a newcomer to biathlon, Kari
Luneman of Grand Rapids. Julie
Warneke, Elk River, finished third 1:30
behind Luneman. Mt Itasca is feverishly preparing for the U.S. National

Saturday's race was run under
clear skies and on artificial snow, over a 1.5km loop.
The format was relay style, and the start was in waves of ten. In this
format, competitors have the usual five shots to hit five targets, but
have the opportunity to use three "bonus" rounds to hit any
missed targets. Ben Kremer
of Minneapolis took the first win of the season, with Ben
Byrne of Bovey and Ryan
Cameron of Minneapolis in second and third.
The women's race included an increase in wind, but that didn't slow down
Sonne Nordgren
from Marine who made up for poor shooting by skiing fast and taking first,
followed by Brynden Manbeck
of Grand Rapids and Emelia DeMarchis
of Burlington, VT.
Sunday's
race traveled over the same course as on Saturday, but this time the format
was pursuit style with random order of starts. In this race biathletes
shoot four stages, including twice in the prone position and twice standing
up with 150m penalty laps for missed targets. On the Men's side Ben
Byrne outshot the competition to land in
first place followed by Ryan Cameron
and Ben Kremer.
Brit Samela,
of Duluth, took the best shooting of the day, with only 4 of 20 shots
missed in windy conditions, on her way to winning the women's field followed
by Sonne Nordgren
from Marine and Brynden Manbeck
of Grand Rapids . A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to all the volunteers who
made the race possible with especially shovelling and timing.

The 6th
Annual Fall Rollerski Biathlon Festival
moved to Camp Ripley from Elk River to accomodate the growing size of
the event. The first day of competition was an "Individual" format race-
12.5 km rollerskiing with 4 bouts of shooting and time penalty for misses.
The second day was a "Mass Start" event. The same distance as
the Individual, but with penalty loops for missed shots. ::results

Ben Kremer and Piotr Bednarski ran to 4th
and 5th place finishes in the Half Voyageur Trail Marathon on July 13th.
The course covers rugged trails from the Lake Superior Zoo to Carlton.
This is the same trail that is used for the Minnesota Voyageur Trail Ultra
(50 miler), but only one way - plus an extra loop, about 26+ miles. Many
skiers and biathletes have been known to race here and generally do quite
well. Other biathlete finishers were Dan Campbell, Ryan Cameron and Brit
Salmela. ::results
